Microsoft is making Copilot Chat a lot safer to use. The company just announced new security improvements for Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat in the form of SafeLinks, which is now built into Copilot’s responses.
SafeLinks is part of Microsoft Defender for Office 365. It protects users by checking links at the time you click them. Now, it works inside Copilot Chat on desktop, web, Outlook Mobile, Teams Mobile, and the Copilot mobile app.
Here’s how SafeLinks works on Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat
When Copilot includes a link in its answer, SafeLinks scans it. If the link is risky, you’ll see a warning. If it’s safe, the site will load as usual. You don’t need to change any settings. It just works, as long as you have Microsoft Defender for Office 365 Plan 1 or 2.
Microsoft says the SafeLinks update for 265 Copilot Chat is live globally. The goal is to stop dangerous links before they cause harm. Well, there’s more. Even users without Defender plans will get extra protection. Copilot Chat now checks link reputation for everyone. So if a bad link shows up, you’ll still get a pop-up alert.
Well, there is another change too. Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat will no longer block or hide links from its source material. If a link is part of the data used to answer your question, you’ll now see it. This should make answers more useful and easier to explore.
And finally, Microsoft says SafeLinks will come to Copilot app chats in Word, PowerPoint, and Excel soon. It’s clear Microsoft wants Copilot Chat to be more than helpful. It wants it to be safe, too.
