After replacing the Edge New Tab Page with Copilot, Microsoft is now working on “Copilot Mode” in Edge Canary.
Microsoft, obsessed about users noticing Copilot in Edge browser via prompts and the New Tab Page experiment, is now testing Copilot Mode in Edge browser.
The feature and its respective option can be seen in Edge Settings. Copilot mode is enabled by default for some users, who can opt-out at any time by toggling off the option.

The newly discovered Copilot Mode could be an AI browsing assistant that surpasses the current sidebar implementation. Although exact details remain unclear, its description suggests it will redefine how users access and interact with web content.
Unlike the existing Copilot sidebar, which requires manual activation, Copilot Mode could offer an always-available AI experience that proactively improves browsing. This aligns with Microsoft’s vision of Copilot as “your AI companion that helps you navigate the chaos” of digital information.
Copilot Mode may automatically interpret webpage content to provide relevant suggestions and answers without explicit prompts. Potential features include Real-time explanations of complex concepts, Automatic summarization of lengthy articles, and Contextual recommendations based on page content
Microsoft has already showcased similar features in Copilot Vision, which “lets Copilot understand the webpage you’re viewing and help answer questions or suggest next steps.”
The feature could be different from Copilot Vision, we need to wait and see what this feature brings to Edge with future updates.
Microsoft may end up pushing more AI into the Edge browser, which may improve or ruin your browsing experience powered by Copilot. What do you think of Copilot Mode in Edge? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
