Microsoft is quietly working on a new feature for Copilot called Live Portraits, according to TestingCatalog. It’s still an experimental feature that gives users a visual, interactive face to talk to. Instead of just a floating chat window or voice, you’d get to choose from a list of portrait-style avatars—male or female, stylized but professional-looking.
Copilot could soon get the Live Portraits feature introduces customizable avatars
Right now, if you click on one of these portraits (assuming you find the hidden feature), you’ll end up on a placeholder page built for voice chats.
Internal references to “3D generations” hint at possible animated, expressive avatars—maybe even ones you can design yourself.
That makes you wonder about those earlier “Copilot Characters” Microsoft floated. Those seemed more fun and cartoonish. But these new Copilot customizable avatars feel aimed at adults, maybe for meetings or productivity sessions where you’d rather not talk to a plain text box.
Live Portraits might be part of a larger Copilot upgrade
Alongside Live Portraits, Microsoft’s also testing better OneDrive integration, plus updates to Copilot Pages and Memories.
For now, the portraits are expected to roll out on the web first, especially in areas where Copilot supports voice. A desktop release could come later, once the system’s polished.
