OpenAI hits back at Elon Musk, denies lawsuit allegations

OpenAI is rolling out GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini to ChatGPT, the company said on X Wednesday. The company says that these updates improve the ChatGPT experience for both free and paid users.

GPT-4.1 is faster and better at coding and following instructions than the older GPT-4o. It is now available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers. Meanwhile, GPT-4.1 mini is coming to everyone, both free and paid users. That’s why OpenAI is removing GPT-4.0 mini from ChatGPT for all users.

OpenAI’s GPT-4.1 isn’t a new model; it was launched last month

OpenAI first released GPT-4.1 and its mini model back in April for developers using the API. However, ChatGPT users only get access now. When OpenAI launched GPT-4.1 in April, some AI researchers criticized the company.

They said OpenAI didn’t share a safety report with this update. OpenAI responded by saying GPT-4.1 isn’t a major leap over previous models. It doesn’t need the same safety checks as more advanced models.

In a post on X, OpenAI’s head of safety, Johannes Heidecke, noted:

GPT-4.1 doesn’t introduce new modalities or ways of interacting with the model, and doesn’t surpass o3 in intelligence. This means that the safety considerations here, while substantial, are different from frontier models.

Besides rolling out GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini to ChatGPT, OpenAI promised to share safety check results more often. The company launched a new Safety Evaluations Hub. This hub will publish these results and updates regularly moving forward. The goal is to be more open about how safe these models are.
