Windows Backup app new migration option feature image

Microsoft started public testing of the Windows Backup app back in March 2023. However, the company has been working on it behind the scenes. According to Windows enthusiast, @phantomofearth, the company has added a new migration tool to Windows Backup app for easy transfer of data.

The Windows Backup app now has the “Transfer files to new PC” option for easy migration

For the uninitiated, Wuindows Backup is an easy-to-use app that backs up files and syncs settings. While it initially made some users annoyed due to forced installation, things have been pretty smooth since the day one. If you haven’t used it yet, this article explains how it works.

Anyway, @phantomofearth has spotted some new changes within the Windows Backp app and it’s related to migration of data. In the latest Windows 11 Dev (26200.5600) and Beta (Beta 26120.3964) builds, the tipster found a new “Transfer files to new PC” option alogside the usual “Backup this PC to OneDrive.”

The feature can be seen inside the same Backup app and lets you move local files, apps, settings, and login data to a different PC over your network. You can check the image below.

The two computers pair using a passcode. Once connected, the migration begins. No need to use cloud storage or external drives. It’s a clean and easy way to move everything.

References to this Windows Backup app migration tool first showed up in Insider builds last year. At the time, Microsoft called it a bug. Now, we can tell it wasn’t a bug afterall. It’s worth noting that the feature isn’t widely available yet, but it’s coming soon. When it’s fully rolled out, the Windows Backup app migration tool might be the easiest way to set up a new PC.
